One bright morning, CUTIS the clever little monkey made a promise to his good friend Goat. The two friends had spent the day playing near the farm, and before they parted ways, CUTIS promised that he would help Goat gather fresh vegetables from the garden the next day.
Goat was excited. He trusted CUTIS and looked forward to working together. Early the next morning, Goat arrived at the garden carrying a small basket. He waited patiently for CUTIS to appear.
Minutes passed. Then an hour.
But CUTIS was nowhere to be seen.
Goat felt disappointed and a little upset. “Did CUTIS forget his promise?” he wondered. As the sun climbed higher, Goat decided to begin harvesting the vegetables alone.
Meanwhile, CUTIS had discovered something unexpected. While walking toward the garden, he heard tiny cries coming from a ditch near the road. Rushing over, he found several ducklings trapped in the mud. They were frightened and unable to climb out.
CUTIS immediately stopped and began helping them. One by one, he carefully lifted the ducklings to safety. The rescue took much longer than he expected, and he completely lost track of time.
When CUTIS finally remembered his promise to Goat, he hurried to the garden as fast as he could. He expected Goat to be angry, and he felt guilty for arriving so late.
To his surprise, Goat was indeed upset. Before CUTIS could explain, Goat asked why he had broken his promise.
Instead of making excuses, CUTIS honestly told the whole story. He explained how the ducklings had needed help and how he couldn’t leave them alone. Then he apologized sincerely for not finding a way to send a message.
Everyone nearby listened carefully. What happened next surprised them all.
Goat looked at CUTIS for a moment and then smiled. Rather than staying angry, he thanked CUTIS for helping animals in need. CUTIS then worked twice as hard in the garden to make up for his mistake.
By the end of the day, the friends had harvested more vegetables than ever before.
