Early one sunny morning, Lily followed Dad into the garden with a big smile on her face. Dad had an important job to finish that day—harvesting fresh chayote to take to the market and sell.
Lily was excited to help.
She carried a small basket beside Dad and carefully walked between the rows of green vines. The chayote plants had grown beautifully, with plenty of fresh fruits hanging beneath the leaves.
Dad showed Lily how to recognize the chayote that was ready to harvest.
“Look carefully,” Dad said. “We want the fresh ones that are big and healthy.”
Lily nodded seriously. She looked around and spotted her first chayote hiding underneath the leaves.
“There it is!” Lily happily pointed.
Dad smiled and helped her gently pick it from the vine. Lily carefully placed it into her basket as if it were something precious.
After that, Lily became even more enthusiastic. She searched under the leaves, checking every plant. Whenever she found a good chayote, she called Dad over to show him.
“Dad, I found another one!”
“Well done, Lily!” Dad encouraged her.
Soon, Lily’s little basket became full. She proudly carried it back to Dad, but the basket was becoming heavier than she expected. She took a few slow steps before stopping to catch her breath.
Dad laughed gently and offered to help.
“Let’s carry it together.”
Lily happily held one side while Dad carried the other. Working together, they brought the harvested chayote to the house.
They then sorted the vegetables carefully. Dad removed any damaged ones while Lily arranged the fresh chayote into neat piles. She seemed very proud to see how much they had harvested.
Once everything was ready, Dad loaded the chayote for the trip to the market.
Before leaving, he thanked Lily for helping.
“You worked very hard today,” Dad said.
Lily smiled proudly and gave Dad a little hug.
At the market, the fresh green chayote quickly attracted customers. Dad was happy to make some sales, and Lily was thrilled to see the result of their hard work.
For Lily, it wasn’t just about selling vegetables. It was about spending time with Dad, learning how farm work becomes a source of income, and discovering the joy of helping her family.
As they headed home, Lily looked back at the empty baskets and smiled. She couldn’t wait for their next farming adventure!
