It all started on a quiet afternoon when CUTIS disappeared into the backyard for much longer than usual. At first, no one thought much of itāhe was always curious, always exploring. But when he came back, something felt⦠different. He was acting unusually calm, yet strangely protective of something no one could see.
Later that evening, faint chirping sounds began echoing from behind the shed. Dad paused, raising an eyebrow. āDo you hear that?ā he asked. CUTIS froze. His eyes widened for a split second before he quickly tried to distract everyone with a random story. But the soft, unmistakable āpeep peepā continued.
Unable to ignore it, Dad walked toward the sound, with CUTIS nervously following behind. And thenāthere it was. A small box tucked neatly in the corner, lined with old cloth⦠and inside were three tiny ducklings, huddled together.
Silence filled the air.
CUTIS looked down, rubbing his hands together. āI⦠I found them near the pond,ā he admitted quietly. āThey were alone. I didnāt want anything bad to happen to them.ā
Dad sighed, clearly caught between frustration and surprise. āSo you decided to adopt them⦠without telling anyone?ā
CUTIS nodded slowly, bracing himself for a lecture. But instead, something unexpected happened. One of the ducklings waddled toward Dadās shoe and gently pecked it. The tension broke instantly.
Mom couldnāt help but laugh. āWell⦠looks like theyāve already chosen their home.ā
Dad shook his head, trying to hide a smile. āThis is a big responsibility, CUTIS. Ducks need proper care, food, and space.ā
āIāll do everything!ā CUTIS said quickly. āI promise!ā
After a long pause, Dad finally gave ināwith conditions. CUTIS would be fully responsible for feeding, cleaning, and making sure the ducklings stayed safe. It wasnāt just a cute moment anymoreāit was a real commitment.
That night, CUTIS carefully checked on his new feathered friends, a proud smile on his face. What started as a secret had turned into a lesson about compassion, responsibility, and earning trust.
And from that moment on, the backyard was never quiet again.
