Lily Asked Dad to Let Her Take Care of the Duckling She Found

One bright morning after the rain had stopped, Lily wandered into the backyard, her boots squishing softly in the wet grass. As she explored near the small pond behind the house, she heard a faint, trembling sound—cheep… cheep… Curious, Lily followed the noise until she discovered a tiny duckling shivering beside a bush. It looked lost, its fluffy yellow feathers damp and its eyes wide with fear.

“Dad! Dad, come quickly!” Lily called, her voice filled with urgency.

Her dad rushed over and knelt beside her. “What did you find, Lily?”

“It’s a duckling,” she said gently, cupping her hands around the little creature. “I think it’s alone. Can we help it?”

Her dad looked around, scanning the area. “It might have gotten separated from its family,” he said thoughtfully. “We should be careful not to take it away if its mother is nearby.”

They waited quietly for a while, but no other ducks came. The duckling continued to chirp softly, pressing closer to Lily’s warm hands.

“Dad,” Lily said, her eyes hopeful, “can I take care of it? Just until it’s safe?”

Her dad smiled, seeing the kindness in her heart. “Taking care of an animal is a big responsibility, Lily. You’ll need to feed it, keep it warm, and make sure it’s safe. Are you ready for that?”

Lily nodded eagerly. “I promise I’ll do my best!”

With a gentle nod, her dad agreed. Together, they prepared a small box with soft cloth and placed it in a warm corner of the house. Lily carefully gave the duckling water and some suitable food, watching happily as it began to relax.

Over the next few days, Lily cared for the duckling with great dedication. She woke up early to check on it and made sure it was always comfortable. Slowly, the duckling grew stronger and more playful.

One afternoon, they returned to the pond. This time, a group of ducks swam nearby. The little duckling chirped excitedly and waddled toward them.

Lily smiled, though her eyes were a little teary. “Goodbye, little one,” she whispered.

Her dad placed a hand on her shoulder. “You did something wonderful, Lily.”

And as the duckling rejoined its family, Lily felt proud—knowing that kindness can make a big difference, even in the smallest lives.
