One sunny morning, Monkey Lyly woke up feeling especially happy. She followed her mother outside and suddenly spotted something that made her eyes sparkle—a fresh bundle of sweet sugar cane!
Lyly loved sugar cane. Whenever she saw it, she would imagine the delicious crunchy sound and sweet juice inside. She quickly hurried over, picked up a piece, and excitedly tried to bite it.
But before she could take a big bite, Mom gently stopped her.
“Wait, Lyly! You can’t eat that yet,” Mom said.
Lyly froze. She looked at the sugar cane, then at her mother. Her happy expression quickly disappeared.
“Why not?” Lyly seemed to ask with a disappointed little face.
Mom explained that the sugar cane had just been brought home and needed to be cleaned and prepared properly first. It was also very hard, and Lyly might hurt her little teeth if she tried to chew it immediately.
Lyly wasn’t convinced. She hugged the sugar cane and looked at Mom with the saddest eyes she could make.
“Please?” she seemed to beg.
Mom smiled and promised that Lyly could enjoy some later after it was washed, peeled, and cut into small, safe pieces.
While Mom prepared it, Lyly sat nearby impatiently. Every few seconds, she peeked at the sugar cane to see whether it was ready.
Then Lyly noticed something else. Dad was carrying a basket of fresh fruit toward the kitchen.
Curious, Lyly forgot about her disappointment for a moment and followed him. Dad laughed and offered her a small piece of banana instead.
Lyly happily accepted the snack, but she still kept glancing toward the sugar cane.
Finally, Mom called, “Lyly, it’s ready!”
Lyly rushed over with excitement. Mom handed her a small piece that had been properly cleaned and prepared.
Lyly took one careful bite.
Crunch!
Her eyes widened with delight. The sweet juice made her smile from ear to ear.
Mom laughed as Lyly eagerly asked for another piece.
Lyly had learned an important lesson that day: sometimes waiting is difficult, but it can make a delicious treat even more enjoyable!
