It was a quiet evening, and the house had finally settled into silence. Lily lay in bed, eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling. She wasn’t sleepy at all. In fact, something much more exciting was on her mind—the delicious chocolate cake sitting in the kitchen.
Earlier that day, Dad had brought the cake home as a special treat, but he made it clear: “We’ll save it for tomorrow after dinner.” Lily nodded obediently at the time, but now, in the darkness of her room, that promise felt very far away.
Her tummy gave a small, impatient rumble.
Lily slowly sat up, listening carefully. No footsteps. No sound from Dad’s room. This was her chance.
Tiptoeing out of bed, she quietly crept down the hallway. The floor creaked beneath her feet, and she froze, holding her breath. Still nothing. Dad was fast asleep.
When she reached the kitchen, her eyes sparkled. There it was—the cake, perfectly untouched. Lily quickly grabbed a fork and cut herself a big piece. “Just one bite,” she whispered.
But one bite turned into two… then three… and before she knew it, frosting was on her cheeks, her fingers, even her nose. She tried to stifle her giggles as she enjoyed every sweet mouthful.
Suddenly—click! The kitchen light turned on.
“Lily?”
She froze like a statue, eyes wide, fork mid-air.
Dad stood at the doorway, arms crossed, trying very hard not to laugh. Lily slowly turned around, her face covered in chocolate.
“I… I was just checking if it was still good…” she mumbled.
Dad raised an eyebrow. “At midnight?”
For a moment, there was silence—then both of them burst into laughter.
Dad shook his head and handed her a napkin. “Alright, little cake thief. Next time, we share.”
Lily grinned, cheeks still full of cake. That night, the secret didn’t stay secret—but it became a funny memory they would both remember forever.
