Dark clouds covered the sky as loud thunder echoed across the countryside. Heavy rain poured from above, turning the small dirt paths into puddles. Inside the warm little house, Lily watched the storm through the window, hoping everyone would stay safe indoors.
Just then, Dad quietly grabbed his raincoat and an umbrella.
“Dad, where are you going?” Lily asked with concern.
“I’ll be back soon,” Dad replied with a gentle smile.
Lily looked outside again. The rain was getting even heavier, and strong winds shook the trees. She couldn’t stop worrying. What if Dad slipped on the muddy road? What if lightning struck nearby? So many thoughts filled her mind that she couldn’t sit still.
Mom comforted Lily, reminding her that Dad was careful and knew how to stay safe. Still, Lily paced around the house, glancing at the clock every few minutes. Time seemed to pass so slowly.
Unable to hide her concern, Lily prepared a warm towel, a dry jacket, and a hot cup of ginger tea so Dad could warm up as soon as he returned. She even placed his favorite slippers near the front door.
As the rain continued to fall, Lily whispered, “Please come home safely, Dad.”
Nearly an hour later, Lily heard footsteps outside. She rushed to the door, expecting to see Dad soaked from head to toe. Instead, Dad walked in smiling with a large waterproof box carefully tucked under his arm.
“What is that?” Lily asked curiously.
Dad laughed softly. “Open it and see.”
Lily carefully lifted the lid and gasped with surprise. Inside were colorful flower seedlings, fresh vegetable seeds, and a small birdhouse kit. Dad explained that he had gone to a nearby gardening shop because he wanted to surprise the family with everything they needed to create a beautiful garden together.
“The rain helped me decide,” Dad said. “After a storm, the soil is perfect for planting.”
Lily’s worried face quickly turned into the brightest smile. She gave Dad a big hug, relieved that he had returned home safely.
The next morning, the family planted the flowers and vegetables together in the fresh, rain-soaked garden. As they worked side by side, butterflies fluttered nearby, and birds sang from the trees.
Lily realized that although she had been frightened by the storm, Dad’s thoughtful surprise had brought the whole family even closer together. Sometimes, the greatest gifts are not expensive presents but acts of love, care, and the joy of creating happy memories with the people who matter most.
